In lieu of tonight’s celebration of the best in film (and the red carpet), I thought I’d kick things off with Oscar-nominated actress Lupita Nyong’o. As I wrote before, I’ve been obsessing over the newcomer ever since she graced the red carpet for film premieres. Currently on a winner’s streak in both awards and fashion, Lupita is my latest star style crush. Not one to shy away from bright colors and prints as well as daring silhouettes and bold shades of makeup, Lupita is every bit as fearless on the style circuit as she is with her on-screen portrayal of Patsey in 12 Years a Slave.  Her fresh and nearly flawless ebony skin serve as the perfect backdrop for the latest designer duds. I love that she keeps her accessories to a minimum and allows the garment to shine on its own, albeit with a bold lip and eyeshadow here and there. From classic sheaths to sophisticated gowns, Lupita has been spot-on this past year. Here are a few of my favorite looks:

When it comes to languid, floor-length gowns in bold colors, Lupita gets it right. The actress wore a turquoise Gucci gown with a beautiful floral neckline to the SAG Awards. She looked stunning in a textured yellow and sleeveless J. Mendel column gown at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards. The jade Christian Dior Couture gown she wore to the BAFTA’s has to be my favorite red carpet gown she’s worn. It was just so simple and chic with gold accessories complementing the dress.

These are a few of my favorite looks where she nails prints and texture. At the DuJour Magazine cover party, she wore one of my favorite designers who’s known for prints–Peter Pilotto. She completed the green “Mira” 2014 resort dress with lime green Manolo Blahnik pumps, a gold Michael Nelson clutch and a Joan Horing ring. As the face of Miu Miu, it was only fitting that she wore a light pink pleated dress with an adorable bird print flowing throughout from its spring 2014 collection and Christian Louboutin red T-strap pumps at the Los Angeles Premiere. Lastly, she wore another Peter Pilotto 2014 resort favorite to the 2014 Film Independent Filmmaker Grant and Spirit Awards nominees’ brunch. I love the airy top and shorts combo and her white Sophia Webster pumps, Anya Hindmarch clutch and W. Britt jewels.

Lupita frequently wears classic shift and A-line dresses, but her use of color and prints always take the basic silhouette up a notch. I love the pink short-sleeve Miu Miu dress she wore to their spring 2014 fashion show. She also wore a blue Roland Mouret “Ekubu” dress with black pumps to the New York Film Festival Premiere. Lupita attended the Q&A session with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and Ann Curry wearing her signature bright colors in this silk jacquard sleeveless Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Capsule Collection dress. I love the combination of coral, violet and gold and her violet patent leather Christian Louboutin “Bat” pumps.

And when she’s not wearing bold hues, Lupita nails monochromatic looks as well. At the 2013 Governors Awards, she wore this sleek resort 2014 Prabal Gurung wrap dress. I love the menswear inspiration on the tuxedo portion of the dress. She paired it with white Christian Louboutin “Batignolles” python pumps and a black Charlotte Olympia “Domino” Pandora clutch. Another favorite was her draped black-and-cream, dual-side resort 2014 Lanvin gown at the BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards. It has the ease and flow that most Grecian -inspired gowns have but with a little twist in the shoulder detail of the bodice. She wore a knee-length black Christopher Kane dress with side cutouts and Christian Louboutin “Paulina” pumps to the 2013 BFI London Film Festival Premiere.

She plays up earth tones and metallics here in these looks. At the premiere of her new movie with Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore, Non-Stop, she wore a shiny lame plisse strapless dress in copper from Lanvin’s spring 2014 collection. I love the black zipper detail down the front as well as her Sergio Rossi pumps and black Rauwolf clutch. Nabbing the Best Supporting Actress trophy at the NAACP Image Awards, Lupita looked gorgeous in this pre-fall 2014 Givenchy with matching Givenchy sandals. I love the burnt orange and desert colors here along with the plunging neckline and pleats. Her makeup and hair were superb. She worked a fitted spring 2014 Stella McCartney one-shoulder dress and matching clutch at the 25th Annual Producers Guild of America Awards. The color really works against her amazing skin. I love that asymmetrical neckline!

Crop tops and cutouts galore! At the Women in Film Pre-Oscar cocktail party, she wore a spring 2014 Michael Kors cutout dress with Pedro Garcia Rosette satin pumps. She sizzled in a cobalt blue Stella McCartney dress at the LoveGold event. At the 7th Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, she wore a cream crop top and skirt spring 2014 Giambattista Valli combo with matching Sophia Webster shoes, an Elie Saab clutch and Neil Lane jewels.

One word for all three of these gowns and Lupita’s style: elegant. In a long sleeve, embellished white Prada gown and gold Raso stone clutch, the actress shined at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival Premiere. I also loved the red caped Ralph Lauren gown she wore to the Golden Globes. Another favorite was the white Calvin Klein gown with cutouts that she wore to the Critics Choice Awards.

I love her in formal casual wear too! Lupita wore a Veronica Beard scuba bustier jumpsuit and Paul Andrew printed pumps to the TIFF HFPA/InStyle party. At the MoMA Film Benefit, she wore a Chanel fall 2013 couture ensemble, featuring a grey tweed jacket, black embellished halter dress, strappy Christian Louboutin sandals and a Chanel clutch. I love this purple spring 2014 Cushnie et Ochs jumpsuit she wore on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

I hope to be able to add Lupita to my best-dressed list tonight and celebrate her Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress. Stay tuned!

What have been your favorite fashion moments from the Kenyan star? What designer do you think she’ll wear tonight on the red carpet?
